"One of the things that Chris and I have come to together and enunciated internally is that one thing that you can't do is maintain success. If you sit on your lead, you lose your lead," Wachtel tells The Hollywood Reporter of the inspiration to broaden its schedule of hit dramas, including Burn Notice, Covert Affairs and new entry Suits. What's more, says McCumber of unscripted's appeal, "it's a new audience that isn't necessarily watching USA right now." Box Office Report: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Powers Thanksgiving, Nears $500 Mil Worldwide

Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn--Part 1 had the sharpest bite at the Thanksgiving box office, winning the extended holiday with $62.3 million and pushing its worldwide cume to nearly $500 million.our editor recommends'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Causing Seizures in U.S. MoviegoersBox Office Report: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' and 'Muppets' Rule Thanksgiving'Twilight: Breaking Dawn's' Taylor Lautner on His Most Challenging Scene and Jacob's Massive Transformation (Video) 'Breaking Dawn's' Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene Reunite in 'A Warrior's Heart' Trailer (Video)'Breaking Dawn' Wedding Dress to Be Sold By Carolina HerreraRelated Topics•Twilight Breaking Dawn's domestic cume through Sunday is an estimated $221.3 million, while it earned another $71.5 million at the international box office this weekend for a foreign cume of $268 million and worldwide total of $489.3 million. Domestically, the film continues to pace slightly behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which had earned $230 million at the same point. PHOTOS: 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1' Black Carpet Premiere Disney also scored a notable Thanksgiving victory with The Muppets. The family film, produced for a modest $45 million, beat a number of competitors to gross $42 million for the Wednesday-Sunday stretch, good enough to restore luster to the iconic brand, which has been off the bigscreen for more than a decade. However, the holiday box office was down 12 percent from Thanksgiving 2010 amid the continuing slump in moviegoing. Last year,Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1grossed $75 million and Disney'sTangledopened to $68.7 million over the holiday. Part of the reason for the dip could be a glut of family friendly titles, fragmenting the audience. Opening opposite The Muppets were Sony and Aardman's Arthur Christmas and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, all of which had to compete with Happy Feet Two, which opened Nov. 18. Muppets easily did more than double the business of its competitors, although its production budget was far less. For Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross, the movie was the first step in reviving the brand across all platforms, including television and consumer products. "The entire goal was to bring back the Muppets, and this great opening signifies that we've done just that," said Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice president of worldwide distribution. PHOTOS: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn': New Images Produced by Sony and Aardman Entertainment, Arthur Christmas opened to $17 million, not enough to topple Warner Bros. holdover Happy Feet Two, which came in No. 3 and grossed $18.4 million. Generally speaking, Happy Feet Two has been a dissapointment, and it's 10-day domestic cume of $43.8 million is not much more than the first Happy Feet grossed in its first weekend. Sony--and even other studio rivals--believe Arthur Christmas will have strong legs because of its holiday theme. And like Muppets and Hugo, Arthur Christmas received glowing reviews. Audiences followed in suit, bestowing Muppets with an A CinemaScore and Arthur Christmas with an A-. Arthur Christmas cost $95 million to produce, and is already a hit in the U.K., home of Aardman. The film grossed a total $11.9 million at the international box office this weekend from 24 markets for a foreign total of $22.3 million, and worldwide cume of $39.3 million. It has earned $12.7 million in the U.K., where it was up again this weekend in its third frame. Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer believes Arthur Christmas will have have the same sustainability in North America. "It's a Christmas story that will resonate more and more as we near the holiday," he said. Hugo--the filmmaker's first foray into the 3D family market--didn't receive a CinemaScore since it opened on only 1,277 screens, grossinng a better-than-expected $15.4 million. Paramount decided to roll the film out slowly, hoping to ride the wave of awards attention and good word of mouth. Scorsese's film is playing older than a usual family movie, and to more sophisticated audiences. To boot, 75 percent of the earnings came from 3D screens, bucking the overall downturn in 3D attendance and highlighting Paramount's push to emphasis the 3D factor. "Not only were we on a fraction of the screens of our competitors, the marketing spend was managed carefully as we expand the film," said Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan, adding that Hugo will move into a couple of more hundred theaters next weekend. Still, Hugo could be problematic for Graham King's GK Films, since its budget was north of $150 million. GK Films fully financed the film. PHOTOS: 'The Muppets' Premiere Red Carpet Another Thanksgiving player turned out to be Cameron Crowe's Matt Damon-Scarlett Johansson Christmas film We Bought a Zoo, which 20th Century Fox snuck on Saturday in more than 800 theaters across the country. Fox is reporting sell-out shows on both coasts and in America's heartland. "The audience was multi-generational, family and non-family alike. The exit polls were phenomenal, from NY to Minneapolis, from Kansas City to Los Angeles," Fox senior vice president of distribution Chris Aronson said. At the specialty box office, a trio of awards contenders opened to strong numbers, while Fox Searchlight's The Descendants racked up significant grosses in its second weekend. Among the new offerings, the black-and-white, silent film The Artist scored one of the top openings of the year for a limited release, grossing $210,414 for the Weinstein Co. after opening Friday in four theaters in NY and Los Angeles for a location average of $52,604--the third best weekend average of 2011. Likewise, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method impressed, grossing $240,944 after opening Wednesday in four theaters in Los Angeles and NY for an impressive five-day location average of $60,236. Sony Pictures Classics is distributing the film. The Weinstein Co. also began rolling out Michelle Williams starrer My Week with Marilyn, which grossed a pleasing $2.1 million after opening on Wednesday. The film was up 13 percent from Friday to Saturday, the most of any movie, and earned an A- CinemaScore. "Younger females in particular just loved this movie," said Erik Lomis, president of distribution for the Weinstein Co. There was still plenty of love left over for Alexander Payne's George Clooney starrer The Descendants, which made a major push over the holiday, expanding to 433 theaters and grossing $9.2 million for a stellar cume of $10.7 million. The Fox Searchlight film came in No. 10. Thanksgiving Box Office Nov. 23-Nov. 27 (five days) Title/Weeks in Release/Studio/Theater Count/Five-Day Total/Cume 1. Michael Fassbender: Everyman, Chameleon, Sex Symbol

That Michael Fassbender is extremely the chameleon, isn't he? He's as being a male Kate Winslet, very easily dashing between contemporary and old-timey roles. Handful of (if any) stars today are as versatile. From Spartan occasions for the swingin' '60s, it seems as though Fassbender has handled virtually every major movie-friendly era. It is therefore not surprising that legendary director David Cronenberg cast Fassbender as Carl Jung in 'A Dangerous Method,' which hits theaters now. Fassbender touches into his role since the conflicted mental health expert fighting along with his associations with chilled mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), unhinged patient/lover Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) and also the extended-suffering wife, Emma (Sarah Gadon). Fassbender clearly gets the acting chops to tug off playing figures from a number of different eras. More youthful crowd gets the right search for this -- his face is simply as credible inside the World war ii drama 'Band of Brothers' since it is inside the 1800s epic 'Jane Eyre.' Hopefully they can resist the lure of Botox treatment treatment and facelifts that other Celebrities have gave directly into (cough, cough, Sylvester Stallone, cough, cough, Mickey Rourke). Ultimately, facelifts just weren't carried out the 1800s. Getting seen Fassbender dressed noisy . last century poor entertainers in 'A Dangerous Method,' we made a decision to wrangle up a gallery of his other memorable roles occur another time. Up next for Fassbender: something set afterwards. (OK, not always. But we could dream! Imagine how awesome Future Fassbender would look!) REVIEW: Broken Beds! Bloody Placenta! Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 Goes to Crazytown -- Almost

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I is such a departure from the previous three Twilight pictures that you could almost consider it a rogue offshoot. Director Bill Condon steers the franchise away from visions of wan, suffering teens and fake-fur werewolf tussles and brings it closer to — if not necessarily close to — something resembling human adult sexual obsession and its attendant responsibilities and anxieties. It’s like Jules and Jim for the Tigerbeat set. In fact, even Twilight naifs, those who haven’t read Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire-romance novels or seen any of the other pictures in the series, can probably step into Breaking Dawn — Part I and get at least a small charge out of it. It’s the most imaginative picture in the franchise, and I say that as a fan of the first picture, Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight, an irony-free adolescent romance that took the idea of teenage erotic fantasy seriously. (I loved the entrance Hardwicke gave Robert Pattinson’s vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen: A pale effigy with brooding eyes and a blond quiff, he strode in the school cafeteria looking like a cross between Elvis and Simon Le Bon.) But the second installment, Chris Weitz’s New Moon, suffered from an excess of cheap, fake werewolf fur — what’s so suspenseful about being attacked by a pack of trappers’ hats from Target? And in the third, David Slade’s Eclipse, the actors looked all but ready to pack it in and go home, as if the mere thought of doing two more movies were enough to send them drifting toward to their Victorian fainting couches. But Breaking Dawn — Part I gives the series a jolt, a little like the lightning-bolt goosing Elsa Lanchester gets in Bride of Frankenstein, a film that’s lovingly referenced here. (It’s also an obvious nod to Condon’s 1998 Gods and Monsters, about the last days of James Whale, the director of the Frankenstein movies.) For those of you not up to speed on the Twilight canon, all you need to know is that Pattinson’s Edward is a vampire hiding in plain sight (with his whole family, no less) in the American northwest. He’s deeply in love with Bella (Kristen Stewart), though if he has sex with her, he’ll go crazy and turn her into a vampire, too. Did I mention that there’s also a neighborhood werewolf clan, perpetually at war with the vampires? The most significant of these wolfies is Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who’s also in love with Bella and who almost got her out of Edward’s clutches. Until Bella and Edward patched it back together and got engaged — they figured they’d work out the sex thing somehow. And that’s where Breaking Dawn — Part I picks up the thread. The movie opens with a wedding. Actually, there are two: One a dream-sequence affair, the other a really-and-truly exchanging of vows and rings. One of these weddings is a vision of white tulle and blood-red roses; the other is a storybook illustration incorporating hanging wisteria, cheerful, saucy wedding toasts (very artfully edited ones, at that), and the sight of the new bride and groom gazing into each other’s eyes, giddy with happiness and the knowledge that the whole thing is finally over. Now they can get to their secluded Brazilian honeymoon shack, where Edward literally breaks the bed. Who knew he had it in him? But the Honeymoon doesn’t last long, and here’s where the kookiness kicks in: Bella discovers that just 14 days after losing her virginity, she is with child. Or with something. And it’s growing inside her fast, like a watermelon with teeth (and, apparently, a thirst for blood). The birth scene that ensues is less Rosemary’s Baby and more Dario Argento, complete with smears of bloody placenta and Fantastic Voyage-style point-of-view shots that take us zooming through Bella’s arteries. Meanwhile, Jacob shows up to growl at Edward and hold Bella’s hand as she gazes placidly into his eyes. Exactly who’s married to whom here? There’s more, but you probably get the picture. While I, and perhaps you, don’t care for all of the Twilight pictures, I have greatly enjoyed the anticipation leading up to each one. For New Moon, especially, that lead-up was wonderful, a pop-culture moment reminiscent of the way audiences might have looked forward to a new Rudolph Valentino film in the ’20s: Moms, grandmoms, gay men, lesbians and last but not least, the preteens and young teenagers who were ostensibly the franchise’s target audience — there were lots of people gearing up for the Twilight movie adventure, and if the pictures let them down in some ways, at least they’d experienced the thrill of anticipation, some thread of connection via a big, lavish popcorn phenomenon. Breaking Dawn — Part 1 may restore the faith of part of that audience, and it may very well turn some of the faithful right the heck off. But Condon hasn’t fully taken the series to crazytown. He, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who has written all of the Twilight adaptations) still hit all the essentials: They prolong the moment at which we finally get to see Bella’s wedding dress — our first glimpse is a sensual tracking shot along her spine, a long, slow stretch of lace-trimmed sheer netting. And Breaking Dawn — Part 1 gives us more laughs than the previous films did: Anna Kendrick, as Edward and Bella’s snotty school friend Jessica, shows up to make some wisecracks about the wedding cake, and series favorite Billy Burke returns as Bella’s protective yet perennially nonplussed dad — Condon gives him a great reaction shot when one of Edward’s brothers offers an off-color wedding toast. There’s also a scene in which various friends and family members weigh in on Bella’s baby-name choices. No snickering, please! (Snicker.) Breaking Dawn — Part I has to include the by-now obligatory wolf-and-vampire battle, and so it does. But it also features a wild, fancifully silly sequence in which the wolves talk to one another in growly, old-phonograph voices. The actors seem recharged, too: Pattinson still hasn’t been fully jolted out of his Eclipse sleepwalking stupor, but he occasionally shows signs of life — particularly in a scene where he attempts to revive his possibly dying wife — and he may yet rally for Part 2. Stewart seems more engaged too; she warms to the slow-burning melodrama Condon’s stoking here, and at certain points of the film she looks less like a lovesick teenager than a seriously exhausted and perplexed adult. Even Lautner seems less like a talking brick than usual. Breaking Dawn — Part 1 hints that the Twilight series will go out with a bang rather than slink off with a whimper. If Condon is going to send us off licking our wounds, he’s at least going to make it sexy. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

'The Descendants' Opens First Napa Valley Film Festival

The Napa Valley Film Festival kicked off its inaugural year with non-stop gourmet food, fine wines and emerging filmmakers. The Descendants, the opening night film, was followed by an A-class gala held at the Robert Mondavi Winery on opening night, Nov. 9. The late vintner's widow Margrit Biever Mondavi raised a glass to the spirit of indie cinema, under a giant tent decorated with a vintage Hollywood theme. This is Napa Valley, of course, so the opening gala featured wine country's top chefs, who laid out a spread including such yummy dishes as foie gras, braised wild boar, Liberty Farm duck and seafood bounty washed down with Mondavi cabernets, pinots and Mumm champagne.our editor recommends'The Descendants' Premiere Red Carpet ArrivalsNapa Valley Film Fest Creates Artists-in-Residence ProgramBox Office Preview: George Clooney's 'The Descendants' Lands in Theaters Wednesday Local vintners supported the fest and opened their mansions, barrel rooms, tasting salons and front porches to host private dinners and VIP receptions. The after-party for the film El Camino del Vino was hosted by Michael Mondavi at his late father's home, which is up for sale. Over the weekend, a series of intimate dinners prepared by Napa's culinary stars were held at different wineries, among them Ken Frank at Staglin Estate, Michel Cornui at Raymond Winery, Renee Ortiz at Cade, Bob Hurley at Paradigm and Chris Aken at Chimney Rock. And this being the wine region, instead of plaques or statues, magnums of such Napa names as Peju, Chappellet, Sterling, Hess, Flora Spings, Jessup Cellars and more were awarded to the winners at the closing night ceremonies on Nov. 13. The Meadowood Best Narrative Feature award of $10,000 was given to Mamitas, directed by Nicolas Ozeki, and the special jury award to Joel Fendleman's David. Best documentary award went to Vikram Gandhi's Kumaré, and special jury mention for social impact to the husband and wife team of Adam and Jaye Fenderson for their film, First Generations. Although Napa Valley is home to pricey restaurants and wines, the festival managed to exude a small town feel, with screenings held in such creative venues as Calistoga's glider port hangar and Yountville's community center as well as a school and a barrel room. Fest-goers also enjoyed fine Napa vintages at screenings and at panel discussions. Co-founded by Brenda and Marc Lhormer, producers of Bottle Shock, the four-day festival unspooled 102 films screened in four villages (or appellations) from Napa and Yountville to St. Helena and Calistoga. The film linup included a preview of J. Edgar and the closing night film, Like Crazy. The festival held over Veteran's Day weekend, honored veterans and vintners along with actors on Tribute Night emceed by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush (who earlier that day was learning the art of wine blending at Raymond winery). Jeffery Wright was acknowledged with Humanitarian Career Achievement award for his work in Sierra Leone, Judy Greer received the Spotlight award, and Felicity Jones, the Rising Star award. Forming global philanthropic partnership with Roots of Peace (an organization dedicated to turning mines to vines) the festival honored Margrit Mondavi, Lt. Gen. John F. Campbell and William Murray, president emeritus of Bank of Marin. For some attendees it was a tough choice between a screening, a wine tasting, a blending session or a food demo at Bosch Culinary Stage set up at the Oxbow Market. There also were panels at the Buick Tweet House at Avia Hotel's lounge and late night after-after parties at eateries such as Bottega, Farmstead and Hurley's. It was the first visit to Napa for some fest-goers such as Wright and jury member Keith Addis. Greer however, had been to Napa recently when she got engaged to TV producer Dean Johnson. "In room 212 of Hotel Bardessono," she revealed. Related Topics

Aaaand Now Brett Ratner Wants to Ruin The Last American Virgin

A brief tangentially related rant in the middle of RatnerGate: I usually give remakes a relatively fair shake before they prove their worth (or lack thereof), but Brett Ratner’s potential redo of the underrated ’80s teen sex comedy The Last American Virgin, I cannot abide. News of Ratner’s intentions slipped by in his recent Howard Stern appearance, understandably, but he had this to say: “I think I jerked off to [LAV star Diane Franklin] at least two hundred times.” Please, universe, don’t let this guy ruin the most surprisingly sensitive teen comedy of the ’80s. #RatnerFreeRemakes, anyone? It's Kinda Like: 'The Hangover' meets 'Freaky Friday' What We Should Say: Hollywood (and audiences) love body swap comedies, whether or not they concern spirits returning in human physiques (1941's 'Here Comes Mr. Jordan,' remade as 'Heaven Can Wait' in 1978 by Warren Beatty), women inhabiting men's physiques ('All of Me,' 1984), males inhabiting women's physiques ('Prelude to some Hug,' 1992), ladies and males changing physiques ('Turnabout,' 1940) or moms and kids and sons and fathers changing physiques ('Freaky Friday, 2003 and 'Like Father, Like Boy,' 1987). Even though the majority of individuals films are enjoyable, we can not the same for 'The Change-Up.' The film puts its focus on four-letter words, gross-out bodily processes, sex functions, double entendres and violence -- all inside a particularly nasty way -- in attitude, in the stance toward women, in the foul-mouthed potty humor. It's cliched and lacks heart. In short, it's wretched. It is a shame to determine four good stars (Bateman, Reynolds, Olivia Wilde and Leslie Mann) wasting their time on such junk. &bull Extra supplies: Commentary by director David Dobkin, erased moments, gag reel, behind-the-moments featurettes. Lynch offers a perverted world by which clean-cut Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) realizes his Mayberry-like hometown isn't so normal when he finds out an individual ear inside a area, leading him into an erotic murder mystery which involves a disturbed nightclub singer (Isabella Rossellini) along with a drug-addicted sadist (Dennis Hopper). The film is ravishing around the giant screen, therefore we hope Fox has been doing justice towards the film in the high-def version. Lindsay Lohan Checks In & Out Of LA County Jail

First Published: November 7, 2011 8:58 AM EST Credit: Getty Images LYNWOOD, Calif. -- Caption Lindsay Lohan sits in court during her probation violation hearing at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles on November 2, 2011Lindsay Lohan was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Monday, less than five hours after she arrived at the suburban womens lockup to serve a 30-day sentence for violating probation. The Mean Girls actress was booked into the Century Regional Detention facility in Lynwood at 8:50 p.m. Sunday, in what was expected to be a short stay because of jail overcrowding. Deputy Tony Moore said Lohan was released early Monday, but didnt have an exact time. News crews staking out the jail said she left at 1:40 a.m. in a black Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle, and that she was in her Venice home by 2 a.m. Lohan had until Nov. 9 to report to the jail. Its Lohans fifth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007. On Wednesday, a judge ordered jail time because Lohan recently violated court orders by getting booted from a community service assignment at a womens shelter. The judge imposed a complicated sentence, telling Lohan that she will now have to perform all of her community service at the county morgue or risk serving an additional 270 days in jail. The sentence also requires Lohan to undergo psychotherapy sessions and appear monthly at court hearings between December and March. The judge also said Lohan can no longer leave the country and needs the permission of her new no-nonsense probation officer to travel outside California. Jail overcrowding has led to significantly shortened jail terms. In 2007, Lohan spent 84 minutes at the jail before being released, and in the past she has served about 20 percent of her sentence, which is roughly six days. Lohan will have to serve 423 hours at the county morgue, where for nearly two weeks she has been mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and washing dirty sheets. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press.
