Olivia Colman Takes New Steps in 'Tyrannosaur'

How does an actor with well-established comedic chops turn in a shattering performance in one of the year's darkest, most disturbing films? Olivia Colman says she did it in "Tyrannosaur" by doing what's real for her characterwith the help of a pitch-perfect script. "I didn't go anywhere different for it," Colman says. "You just go to where you need to go to do her justice." Her work in this film by writer-director Paddy Considine was dubbed the breakout performance at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. One more breakout is coming her way, however. She more than holds our attention as Margaret Thatcher's daughter, Carol, opposite Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady."But in "Tyrannosaur," Colman plays Hannah, a Christian woman who works in a thrift shop and who holds out a literal and figurative hand to the damaged, raging Joseph (Peter Mullan). Yet Hannah bears her own scars, caused in large part by her marriage to the monstrous James (Eddie Marsan). The film began life as Considine's short; in the feature film he expands Hannah's role to show her background and develop her relationship with Joseph.Back Stage: How did you meet Paddy Considine, and how did he cast you in this project?Olivia Colman: We met on a film called "Hot Fuzz." We met the first day of our rehearsals. I knew Paddy was coming, and I was so excited to meet Paddy Considine. And he came up the stairs, and I opened the door for him, and he said, "After you," and I went, "Oh, no, no, after you." And he says that at that point he thought, "Oh, right, she's the one for my short film." I'm so pleased I held the door open for him.Back Stage: How much time did you have to prepare your character for the short?Colman: I didn't. I read the script, but then I had to fly to Glasgow and do my scenes just in one day, because I was in the middle of a job. The short went down very well. It won a BAFTA for best short. After that, people were saying, "I want to know what happens with these characters." And then it was just about four years between the short and the feature. Back Stage: If there was no back story for Hannah, did you make one up for her?Colman: Everything was on the page. She worked in this charity shop; she was the only person who extended a hand of friendship to this man who most people would have walked to the other side of the street away from. I didn't need to know an awful lot more about that. I know lots of actors might disagree with me, but to me I just did what was on the page. She was a lovely, warm person. And when you come to the feature, she just shows herself as a lovely, warm person. She doesn't show what's going on, anyway, in her back story. It's unveiled during the course of the film. But I think it's right that she doesn't show everybody, and that's what's more interesting. And the whole film is about challenging perceptions: You make snap decisions, snap judgments about people, and you're invariably wrong. Looking at the film after you've witnessed what Joseph's done, you can't believe you can feel so differently. But I don't think you need to demonstrate everything, because that's not what people do. They keep their secrets, and they keep them well.Back Stage: Any other research?Colman: I went to this charity called Refuge, in the U.K., which tries to help victims of domestic violence. I talked to women who work for the charitynot to any of the women, or men, they helpbecause I couldn't promise I wouldn't cry. So they gave me a case study to look at, which was so shockinga hundred times worse than anything you saw onscreenand that was enough. I'll never get rid of that now, the horrible images from that. That was enough to inform what I thought Hannah was.Back Stage: What was Paddy's set like? Formal? Funny?Colman: Informal and very, very safe, very friendly. They're all funny people: Paddy, Eddie, and Peter. All lovely, warm people who tell funny stories and joke with each other. Also the crew. When you're feeling exposed when you're doing something, you don't want to hear someone giggling 'cause they're doing a private joke over there. No one did that [on this film]. Everyone was completely committed.Back Stage: What kind of rehearsals did you have?Colman: We had one day that had been put aside, before we started the shoot. Paddy and Peter and I sitting. But it ended up we didn't really talk about the piece at all. We ended up going to the pub and having a drink. The characters were already so whole, so multifaceted, so complete on the page, I didn't want to talk about it. It feels like you're taking the lid off the pressure cooker. If I can feel it, it's all there; please don't make me say it before we have to do it. I told Paddy, "I'm really nervous about rehearsing for this; I don't want to." And he felt the same. Because I felt it so deeply, I would be sobbing during a rehearsal. He said, "No, don't say a word. Roughly when you get to that point, where do you think you might go? [The camera will] just follow you and make sure we get it." That was lovely. It was liberating. Back Stage: What did you learn about acting while working on this film?Colman: There's a certain feeling I have a bit more now, which is I do deserve to be here. I always thought, "I'm going to be found out." I couldn't have done "Iron Lady" three years ago. I did "Iron Lady" three years after this, and I thought, "It's all right; I can hold my own," after Paddy giving me confidence like that.Back Stage: What did you learn watching Streep?Colman: She has a very strong work ethic. There is no ego; there's no vanity; there's no place for that. That's why she is so extraordinarily good at what she does. I don't want to? see the working behind a performance. To be; that's it. And to feel it. And laying on extra stuffI don't enjoy watching that. She takes what she needs to, to make that person real. People would have paid to sit there and watch her in the flesh doing it. And she was amazing, and you completely forgot that underneath the prosthetics she looked different. She became the person.Back Stage: In "Tyrannosaur," what was the most difficult scene for you?Colman: The one I was always terrified of, from the moment I got the script, was Hannah's breakdown. I was scared of doing it justice. I didn't want to let Paddy down. And he shot us chronologically, which was brilliant. Because he's an actor, he knows how important that is. So the whole journey, you've already done it. It makes your job very easy. There was [another] scene which didn't make it to the final cut. I think we all felt it wasn't working. Paddy kept trying. And then I traveled home for the weekend. And Paddy called me and said, "We're going to reshoot that scene." And I was so upset that I hadn't done it right, I've let him down, he'd taken the gamble. And then he says, "It wasn't you. I was saying all the wrong things, and I was directing it wrong." Which is sweet of him.Back Stage: And the one scene you wouldn't mind reshooting?Colman: The scenes I found hardest were the scenes that were re-creating the short. It was weirdit was like an echo. We did it four years previously, and I was trying to make it? fresh again now, but I could still kind of hear my own voice. I found those the hardest, which is why I wouldn't want to shoot them again, 'cause it would just get worse.Back Stage: What was your worst audition ever?Colman: It was for the Donmar [Warehouse, in London]. I was going to be meeting [casting director and creative associate] Anne McNulty, and I was so excited. Quite early on [in my career]. Wanted to be taken on by my agent. And the script had a lot of mention of camera shot things. And it was for the part of a whore. So I had a short skirt and tried to look as whorish as I couldor as I could bear. Got there, took my coat off, and she looked at me and said, "What do you think of the script?" And I said, "Oh, it's good." And she still looked puzzled. And then she said, "Should we have a little read?" And it wasn't the script that I'd been sent. It was for the part of a nun. We did laugh about it, but it was humiliating. And I didn't get that part.Back Stage: That's because the casting director had no imagination. By Dany Margolies December 30, 2011 Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman. PHOTO CREDIT Dave J. The Ladykillers

An Edward Snape for Fiery Angel in colaboration with Stage Entertainment U.K., Fiery Dragons, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, Olympus Theatricals, Studiocanal and Jason Haigh-Ellery presentation of the play in 2 functions by Graham Linehan in the film script by William Rose & by special arrangement with Studiocanal. Directed by Sean Foley. Professor MarcusPeter Capaldi Mrs. WilberforceMarcia Warren Major CourtneyJames Fleet Louis HarveyBen Burns One-RoundClive Rowe Harry RobinsonStephen Wight Constable MacdonaldHarry Peacock Mrs. Jane TromleytonBeverley WalkingConsidering that classic movies are immediately open to watch within the privacy of a person's home for substantially under a fistful of dollars, there actually is no reason for faithfully turning them into costly-to-see plays. Except, that's, once the stage version is really as smartly reinvented as "The Ladykillers." Graham Linehan's sharp script re-imagines the 1955 horror-comedy movie as enchantingly knowing farce. Equipped with Michael Taylor's laugh-inducing design and pleased acting, the show warrants a significantly longer existence expectancy compared to its criminal figures, who arrived at wonderfully sticky finishes. The mechanics of Alexander Mackendrick's Ealing comedy stay the same. Will still be the storyplot of the ramshackle number of crooks who, getting planned to take advantage of a burglar van at King's Mix Station, transfer to preparation mode if you take up accommodations in the home of little old lady Mrs. Wilberforce (Maria Warren) underneath the guise to be people of the string quintet. Everything goes based on plan. They can work the unwitting Mrs. Wilberforce to their plot, however when she finally tumbles for their dastardly deed, she's consumed by indignation. In order to stop her likely to police, they decide they are going to need to meet the play's title. Unlkie the Coen Siblings, who coarsened everything for his or her less-than-effective screen moving, Linehan's change is basically among tone. It's as though he's taken the fabric and moved up a register in to the sensibility of "Arsenic and Old Lace." Rather than harmful the fabric, it raises it. Better yet, such as the stage version of "The 39 Steps" (still running in the western world Finish after 5 years) it welcomes the crowd in around the joke. This is an invitation immediately lapped up. The key is mainly: By helping cover their uneasy creepiness, along with uproarious comedy. That much is signaled in the opening scene, by which we are brought to the higgledy-piggledy home alongside the railway. Within the to begin several visual coups, the sweet house-front wheels round to show a teetering pile of rooms at ocean-sick angles with furniture that shudders and shakes alarmingly whenever a train thunders back and forth from the station. That amount of detailed exaggeration boosts laughs in the get-go, and it is shown within the playing. Professor Marcus, who masterminds the escapade, was performed on the watch's screen with a ghoulish Alec Guinness. He's changed by preening Peter Capaldi, clearly convinced that he's the Napoleon of crime, only taller and comically unhinged. Having a sweep of his forever trailing scarf, he introduces his ill-assorted cohorts. More fully developed figures compared to the film, they are all given a diploma of idiosyncrasy highlighting on madness, which further helps you to in the stakes. Stephen Wight display a genuine gift for slapstick and making the most from props, particularly when they involves him popping uppers and downers, as well as his character's mania to clean. And although Ben Miller's character has got the fewest gags, he will get probably the most mileage from them like a Romanian hard-nut on the moving boil of barely contained fury. Helmer Foley, most widely known as you 1 / 2 of comedy duo The Best Size (whose "The Play Things I Authored" moved to Broadway), packs the experience with visual gags and good-humored stage business together with a homage towards the Marx Borthers, with all of five crooks revealed to become hiding within an improbably small cupboard. He's less proficient at punctuating the large moments. When among the character falls in the roof underneath the scream of the train whistle, as soon as is funny however the audience remains puzzled whether to laugh or applaud since the moment, unlike the smoothness, remains hanging with no proper "button" or finish being added. But although moments like this mean the ball is from time to time dropped, the show exudes comic confidence. In writing it appeared as if another lazy film-to-stage transfer. The gleefully silly production is wittier and altogether more enjoyable than anybody expected.Sets and costumes, Michael Taylor lighting, James Farncombe music and seem, Ben and Max Ringham effects, Scott Penrose production stage manager, Marcus Watson. Opened up, examined, 12 ,. 7, 2011. Running time: 2 Hrs, 15 MIN. Contact David Benedict at benedictdavid@mac.com

"One of the things that Chris and I have come to together and enunciated internally is that one thing that you can't do is maintain success. If you sit on your lead, you lose your lead," Wachtel tells The Hollywood Reporter of the inspiration to broaden its schedule of hit dramas, including Burn Notice, Covert Affairs and new entry Suits. Box Office Report: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Powers Thanksgiving, Nears $500 Mil Worldwide

Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn--Part 1 had the sharpest bite at the Thanksgiving box office, winning the extended holiday with $62.3 million and pushing its worldwide cume to nearly $500 million.our editor recommends'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Causing Seizures in U.S. MoviegoersBox Office Report: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' and 'Muppets' Rule Thanksgiving'Twilight: Breaking Dawn's' Taylor Lautner on His Most Challenging Scene and Jacob's Massive Transformation (Video) 'Breaking Dawn's' Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene Reunite in 'A Warrior's Heart' Trailer (Video)'Breaking Dawn' Wedding Dress to Be Sold By Carolina HerreraRelated Topics•Twilight Breaking Dawn's domestic cume through Sunday is an estimated $221.3 million, while it earned another $71.5 million at the international box office this weekend for a foreign cume of $268 million and worldwide total of $489.3 million. Domestically, the film continues to pace slightly behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which had earned $230 million at the same point. PHOTOS: 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1' Black Carpet Premiere Disney also scored a notable Thanksgiving victory with The Muppets. The family film, produced for a modest $45 million, beat a number of competitors to gross $42 million for the Wednesday-Sunday stretch, good enough to restore luster to the iconic brand, which has been off the bigscreen for more than a decade. However, the holiday box office was down 12 percent from Thanksgiving 2010 amid the continuing slump in moviegoing. Last year,Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1grossed $75 million and Disney'sTangledopened to $68.7 million over the holiday. Part of the reason for the dip could be a glut of family friendly titles, fragmenting the audience. Opening opposite The Muppets were Sony and Aardman's Arthur Christmas and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, all of which had to compete with Happy Feet Two, which opened Nov. 18. Muppets easily did more than double the business of its competitors, although its production budget was far less. For Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross, the movie was the first step in reviving the brand across all platforms, including television and consumer products. "The entire goal was to bring back the Muppets, and this great opening signifies that we've done just that," said Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice president of worldwide distribution. PHOTOS: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn': New Images Produced by Sony and Aardman Entertainment, Arthur Christmas opened to $17 million, not enough to topple Warner Bros. holdover Happy Feet Two, which came in No. 3 and grossed $18.4 million. Generally speaking, Happy Feet Two has been a dissapointment, and it's 10-day domestic cume of $43.8 million is not much more than the first Happy Feet grossed in its first weekend. Sony--and even other studio rivals--believe Arthur Christmas will have strong legs because of its holiday theme. And like Muppets and Hugo, Arthur Christmas received glowing reviews. Audiences followed in suit, bestowing Muppets with an A CinemaScore and Arthur Christmas with an A-. Arthur Christmas cost $95 million to produce, and is already a hit in the U.K., home of Aardman. The film grossed a total $11.9 million at the international box office this weekend from 24 markets for a foreign total of $22.3 million, and worldwide cume of $39.3 million. It has earned $12.7 million in the U.K., where it was up again this weekend in its third frame. Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer believes Arthur Christmas will have have the same sustainability in North America. "It's a Christmas story that will resonate more and more as we near the holiday," he said. Hugo--the filmmaker's first foray into the 3D family market--didn't receive a CinemaScore since it opened on only 1,277 screens, grossinng a better-than-expected $15.4 million. Paramount decided to roll the film out slowly, hoping to ride the wave of awards attention and good word of mouth. Scorsese's film is playing older than a usual family movie, and to more sophisticated audiences. To boot, 75 percent of the earnings came from 3D screens, bucking the overall downturn in 3D attendance and highlighting Paramount's push to emphasis the 3D factor. "Not only were we on a fraction of the screens of our competitors, the marketing spend was managed carefully as we expand the film," said Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan, adding that Hugo will move into a couple of more hundred theaters next weekend. Still, Hugo could be problematic for Graham King's GK Films, since its budget was north of $150 million. GK Films fully financed the film. Michael Fassbender: Everyman, Chameleon, Sex Symbol

That Michael Fassbender is extremely the chameleon, isn't he? He's as being a male Kate Winslet, very easily dashing between contemporary and old-timey roles. Handful of (if any) stars today are as versatile. From Spartan occasions for the swingin' '60s, it seems as though Fassbender has handled virtually every major movie-friendly era. It is therefore not surprising that legendary director David Cronenberg cast Fassbender as Carl Jung in 'A Dangerous Method,' which hits theaters now. Fassbender touches into his role since the conflicted mental health expert fighting along with his associations with chilled mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), unhinged patient/lover Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) and also the extended-suffering wife, Emma (Sarah Gadon). Fassbender clearly gets the acting chops to tug off playing figures from a number of different eras. More youthful crowd gets the right search for this -- his face is simply as credible inside the World war ii drama 'Band of Brothers' since it is inside the 1800s epic 'Jane Eyre.' Hopefully they can resist the lure of Botox treatment treatment and facelifts that other Celebrities have gave directly into (cough, cough, Sylvester Stallone, cough, cough, Mickey Rourke). Ultimately, facelifts just weren't carried out the 1800s. Getting seen Fassbender dressed noisy . last century poor entertainers in 'A Dangerous Method,' we made a decision to wrangle up a gallery of his other memorable roles occur another time. Up next for Fassbender: something set afterwards. (OK, not always. But we could dream! Imagine how awesome Future Fassbender would look!) REVIEW: Broken Beds! Bloody Placenta! Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 Goes to Crazytown -- Almost

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I is such a departure from the previous three Twilight pictures that you could almost consider it a rogue offshoot. Director Bill Condon steers the franchise away from visions of wan, suffering teens and fake-fur werewolf tussles and brings it closer to — if not necessarily close to — something resembling human adult sexual obsession and its attendant responsibilities and anxieties. It’s like Jules and Jim for the Tigerbeat set. In fact, even Twilight naifs, those who haven’t read Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire-romance novels or seen any of the other pictures in the series, can probably step into Breaking Dawn — Part I and get at least a small charge out of it. It’s the most imaginative picture in the franchise, and I say that as a fan of the first picture, Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight, an irony-free adolescent romance that took the idea of teenage erotic fantasy seriously. (I loved the entrance Hardwicke gave Robert Pattinson’s vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen: A pale effigy with brooding eyes and a blond quiff, he strode in the school cafeteria looking like a cross between Elvis and Simon Le Bon.) But the second installment, Chris Weitz’s New Moon, suffered from an excess of cheap, fake werewolf fur — what’s so suspenseful about being attacked by a pack of trappers’ hats from Target? And in the third, David Slade’s Eclipse, the actors looked all but ready to pack it in and go home, as if the mere thought of doing two more movies were enough to send them drifting toward to their Victorian fainting couches. But Breaking Dawn — Part I gives the series a jolt, a little like the lightning-bolt goosing Elsa Lanchester gets in Bride of Frankenstein, a film that’s lovingly referenced here. (It’s also an obvious nod to Condon’s 1998 Gods and Monsters, about the last days of James Whale, the director of the Frankenstein movies.) For those of you not up to speed on the Twilight canon, all you need to know is that Pattinson’s Edward is a vampire hiding in plain sight (with his whole family, no less) in the American northwest. He’s deeply in love with Bella (Kristen Stewart), though if he has sex with her, he’ll go crazy and turn her into a vampire, too. Did I mention that there’s also a neighborhood werewolf clan, perpetually at war with the vampires? The most significant of these wolfies is Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who’s also in love with Bella and who almost got her out of Edward’s clutches. Until Bella and Edward patched it back together and got engaged — they figured they’d work out the sex thing somehow. And that’s where Breaking Dawn — Part I picks up the thread. The movie opens with a wedding. Actually, there are two: One a dream-sequence affair, the other a really-and-truly exchanging of vows and rings. One of these weddings is a vision of white tulle and blood-red roses; the other is a storybook illustration incorporating hanging wisteria, cheerful, saucy wedding toasts (very artfully edited ones, at that), and the sight of the new bride and groom gazing into each other’s eyes, giddy with happiness and the knowledge that the whole thing is finally over. Now they can get to their secluded Brazilian honeymoon shack, where Edward literally breaks the bed. Who knew he had it in him? But the Honeymoon doesn’t last long, and here’s where the kookiness kicks in: Bella discovers that just 14 days after losing her virginity, she is with child. Or with something. And it’s growing inside her fast, like a watermelon with teeth (and, apparently, a thirst for blood). The birth scene that ensues is less Rosemary’s Baby and more Dario Argento, complete with smears of bloody placenta and Fantastic Voyage-style point-of-view shots that take us zooming through Bella’s arteries. Meanwhile, Jacob shows up to growl at Edward and hold Bella’s hand as she gazes placidly into his eyes. Exactly who’s married to whom here? There’s more, but you probably get the picture. While I, and perhaps you, don’t care for all of the Twilight pictures, I have greatly enjoyed the anticipation leading up to each one. For New Moon, especially, that lead-up was wonderful, a pop-culture moment reminiscent of the way audiences might have looked forward to a new Rudolph Valentino film in the ’20s: Moms, grandmoms, gay men, lesbians and last but not least, the preteens and young teenagers who were ostensibly the franchise’s target audience — there were lots of people gearing up for the Twilight movie adventure, and if the pictures let them down in some ways, at least they’d experienced the thrill of anticipation, some thread of connection via a big, lavish popcorn phenomenon. Breaking Dawn — Part 1 may restore the faith of part of that audience, and it may very well turn some of the faithful right the heck off. But Condon hasn’t fully taken the series to crazytown. He, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who has written all of the Twilight adaptations) still hit all the essentials: They prolong the moment at which we finally get to see Bella’s wedding dress — our first glimpse is a sensual tracking shot along her spine, a long, slow stretch of lace-trimmed sheer netting. And Breaking Dawn — Part 1 gives us more laughs than the previous films did: Anna Kendrick, as Edward and Bella’s snotty school friend Jessica, shows up to make some wisecracks about the wedding cake, and series favorite Billy Burke returns as Bella’s protective yet perennially nonplussed dad — Condon gives him a great reaction shot when one of Edward’s brothers offers an off-color wedding toast. There’s also a scene in which various friends and family members weigh in on Bella’s baby-name choices. No snickering, please! (Snicker.) Breaking Dawn — Part I has to include the by-now obligatory wolf-and-vampire battle, and so it does. But it also features a wild, fancifully silly sequence in which the wolves talk to one another in growly, old-phonograph voices. The actors seem recharged, too: Pattinson still hasn’t been fully jolted out of his Eclipse sleepwalking stupor, but he occasionally shows signs of life — particularly in a scene where he attempts to revive his possibly dying wife — and he may yet rally for Part 2. Stewart seems more engaged too; she warms to the slow-burning melodrama Condon’s stoking here, and at certain points of the film she looks less like a lovesick teenager than a seriously exhausted and perplexed adult. Even Lautner seems less like a talking brick than usual. Breaking Dawn — Part 1 hints that the Twilight series will go out with a bang rather than slink off with a whimper. If Condon is going to send us off licking our wounds, he’s at least going to make it sexy. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

'The Descendants' Opens First Napa Valley Film Festival

The Napa Valley Film Festival kicked off its inaugural year with non-stop gourmet food, fine wines and emerging filmmakers. The Descendants, the opening night film, was followed by an A-class gala held at the Robert Mondavi Winery on opening night, Nov. 9. The late vintner's widow Margrit Biever Mondavi raised a glass to the spirit of indie cinema, under a giant tent decorated with a vintage Hollywood theme. This is Napa Valley, of course, so the opening gala featured wine country's top chefs, who laid out a spread including such yummy dishes as foie gras, braised wild boar, Liberty Farm duck and seafood bounty washed down with Mondavi cabernets, pinots and Mumm champagne.our editor recommends'The Descendants' Premiere Red Carpet ArrivalsNapa Valley Film Fest Creates Artists-in-Residence ProgramBox Office Preview: George Clooney's 'The Descendants' Lands in Theaters Wednesday Local vintners supported the fest and opened their mansions, barrel rooms, tasting salons and front porches to host private dinners and VIP receptions. The after-party for the film El Camino del Vino was hosted by Michael Mondavi at his late father's home, which is up for sale. Over the weekend, a series of intimate dinners prepared by Napa's culinary stars were held at different wineries, among them Ken Frank at Staglin Estate, Michel Cornui at Raymond Winery, Renee Ortiz at Cade, Bob Hurley at Paradigm and Chris Aken at Chimney Rock. And this being the wine region, instead of plaques or statues, magnums of such Napa names as Peju, Chappellet, Sterling, Hess, Flora Spings, Jessup Cellars and more were awarded to the winners at the closing night ceremonies on Nov. 13. The Meadowood Best Narrative Feature award of $10,000 was given to Mamitas, directed by Nicolas Ozeki, and the special jury award to Joel Fendleman's David. Best documentary award went to Vikram Gandhi's Kumaré, and special jury mention for social impact to the husband and wife team of Adam and Jaye Fenderson for their film, First Generations. Although Napa Valley is home to pricey restaurants and wines, the festival managed to exude a small town feel, with screenings held in such creative venues as Calistoga's glider port hangar and Yountville's community center as well as a school and a barrel room. Fest-goers also enjoyed fine Napa vintages at screenings and at panel discussions. Co-founded by Brenda and Marc Lhormer, producers of Bottle Shock, the four-day festival unspooled 102 films screened in four villages (or appellations) from Napa and Yountville to St. Helena and Calistoga. The film linup included a preview of J. Edgar and the closing night film, Like Crazy. The festival held over Veteran's Day weekend, honored veterans and vintners along with actors on Tribute Night emceed by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush (who earlier that day was learning the art of wine blending at Raymond winery). Jeffery Wright was acknowledged with Humanitarian Career Achievement award for his work in Sierra Leone, Judy Greer received the Spotlight award, and Felicity Jones, the Rising Star award. Forming global philanthropic partnership with Roots of Peace (an organization dedicated to turning mines to vines) the festival honored Margrit Mondavi, Lt. Gen. John F. Campbell and William Murray, president emeritus of Bank of Marin. For some attendees it was a tough choice between a screening, a wine tasting, a blending session or a food demo at Bosch Culinary Stage set up at the Oxbow Market. There also were panels at the Buick Tweet House at Avia Hotel's lounge and late night after-after parties at eateries such as Bottega, Farmstead and Hurley's. It was the first visit to Napa for some fest-goers such as Wright and jury member Keith Addis. Greer however, had been to Napa recently when she got engaged to TV producer Dean Johnson. "In room 212 of Hotel Bardessono," she revealed. Related Topics

Aaaand Now Brett Ratner Wants to Ruin The Last American Virgin

A brief tangentially related rant in the middle of RatnerGate: I usually give remakes a relatively fair shake before they prove their worth (or lack thereof), but Brett Ratner’s potential redo of the underrated ’80s teen sex comedy The Last American Virgin, I cannot abide. News of Ratner’s intentions slipped by in his recent Howard Stern appearance, understandably, but he had this to say: “I think I jerked off to [LAV star Diane Franklin] at least two hundred times.” Please, universe, don’t let this guy ruin the most surprisingly sensitive teen comedy of the ’80s. #RatnerFreeRemakes, anyone? The Academy awards Will not Fire Brett Ratner After Gay Slur

This is actually the week you Muggles happen to be awaiting: Friday marks the DVD and Blu-ray debut of 'Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows Part 2,' the ultimate chapter within the most effective film franchise ever. There are many evil within this installment from the Potter saga, almost around the evil contained in David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet,' making its Blu-ray debut now our prime-def edition includes 50 minutes of unseen footage. And evil (though unintended) develops within the frames of 'The Change-Up,' a really nasty body-switch comedy that provides the genre a poor title. Continue reading. 'Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' How It Is About: After 10 wonderful years, (and seven movies), the motion picture saga of Harry Potter involves a detailed having a stupendous, visceral, special-effects laden extravaganza. If you'll recall from 'Part 1,' the evil forces of The almighty Voldemort have essentially absorbed Hogwarts and also the Secretary of state for Miracle when preparing for enslaving their competitors and cleansing the planet. Harry, Ron and Hermione -- after what appeared like 40 days and 40 nights within the backwoods looking for the "horcruxes" that provide Voldemort his growing old -- generate enough wizardry strength to manage off from the Dark Lord's minions while Harry themself assumes the evil one out of a fight that will make Raoul Walsh or Mike Larger proud. It's Kinda Like: 'The Large Red-colored One' meets 'Excalibur' What We Should Say: This can be a fitting finish towards the Harry Potter saga: a motion picture tour-p-pressure with strong acting and dazzling effects. As well as in what should be the greatest-grossing series in movie history -- along with a series which has fattened the purses of virtually half the British stars on the planet -- the saga gave us the rare chance to look at several kids come old (fictionally) around the giant screen, seeing their childhoods' finish as a result of duplicitous and evil grown ups (though for each bad adult additionally, there are an optimistic role model). Through the finish of 'Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows Part 2,' Ron and Hermione have matured and acknowledge their fascination with one another while Harry flexes his muscles and kills from the evil father figure. The relaxation from the movie has got the pair battling to prevent wrecking each other peoples lives before they are able to try to obtain original copies back. It's Kinda Like: 'The Hangover' meets 'Freaky Friday' What We Should Say: Hollywood (and audiences) love body swap comedies, whether or not they concern spirits returning in human physiques (1941's 'Here Comes Mr. Jordan,' remade as 'Heaven Can Wait' in 1978 by Warren Beatty), women inhabiting men's physiques ('All of Me,' 1984), males inhabiting women's physiques ('Prelude to some Hug,' 1992), ladies and males changing physiques ('Turnabout,' 1940) or moms and kids and sons and fathers changing physiques ('Freaky Friday, 2003 and 'Like Father, Like Boy,' 1987). Even though the majority of individuals films are enjoyable, we can not the same for 'The Change-Up.' The film puts its focus on four-letter words, gross-out bodily processes, sex functions, double entendres and violence -- all inside a particularly nasty way -- in attitude, in the stance toward women, in the foul-mouthed potty humor. It's cliched and lacks heart. In short, it's wretched. Lindsay Lohan Checks In & Out Of LA County Jail

First Published: November 7, 2011 8:58 AM EST Credit: Getty Images LYNWOOD, Calif. -- Caption Lindsay Lohan sits in court during her probation violation hearing at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles on November 2, 2011Lindsay Lohan was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Monday, less than five hours after she arrived at the suburban womens lockup to serve a 30-day sentence for violating probation. The Mean Girls actress was booked into the Century Regional Detention facility in Lynwood at 8:50 p.m. Sunday, in what was expected to be a short stay because of jail overcrowding. Deputy Tony Moore said Lohan was released early Monday, but didnt have an exact time. News crews staking out the jail said she left at 1:40 a.m. in a black Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle, and that she was in her Venice home by 2 a.m. Lohan had until Nov. 9 to report to the jail. Its Lohans fifth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007. On Wednesday, a judge ordered jail time because Lohan recently violated court orders by getting booted from a community service assignment at a womens shelter. The judge imposed a complicated sentence, telling Lohan that she will now have to perform all of her community service at the county morgue or risk serving an additional 270 days in jail. The sentence also requires Lohan to undergo psychotherapy sessions and appear monthly at court hearings between December and March. The judge also said Lohan can no longer leave the country and needs the permission of her new no-nonsense probation officer to travel outside California. Jail overcrowding has led to significantly shortened jail terms. In 2007, Lohan spent 84 minutes at the jail before being released, and in the past she has served about 20 percent of her sentence, which is roughly six days. Lohan will have to serve 423 hours at the county morgue, where for nearly two weeks she has been mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and washing dirty sheets. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. Real-Life Thieves Stole Heist Tricks From 'The Town'

Best way to learn how rob a bank? Watch 'The Town,' apparently. Five men in NY were just arrested for a string of burglaries allegedly inspired by the 2010 drama directed by and starring Ben Affleck. The NYPD stated that the group used many of the tricks shown in the film, including cutting power to their target's store and splashing bleach onto ATMs and cash drawers to get rid of DNA evidence. Back in May, bank robbers in Chicago used the same nun costumes that Affleck and Jeremy Renner used in the film. The NY crew are reportedly responsible for 62 burglaries since August 2010. An NYPD spokesperson said that the real-life burglars made off with $217,000 after robbing delis, pizzerias and other stores in Brooklyn and Queens. Since 'The Town' was released in September of 2010, the NY crew was already in business before the movie came out. While Affleck got great reviews for 'The Town,' his second directorial effort, and Renner received an Oscar nomination, guess we didn't realize just how inspirational this movie really was. Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday Make A Cancer Patients Day Beautiful

First Published: October 19, 2011 11:32 AM EDT Credit: Caption A cancer patient receives a spa treatmentNY, N.Y. -- Who doesnt love a day of beauty? Whether its a mani/pedi or a massage theyre all feel-good luxuries that lift our spirits and make us feel fabulous! Want to feel even more fabulous? Why not give a day of beauty to someone special in your life who is battling cancer. Fighting cancer may be one of the toughest life challenges a woman faces and a spa treatment allows her to escape (even momentarily) the difficulties in her life. Often times people dealing with cancer, either as patient or caregiver, feel like they have been taken out of their lives, reveals Jennifer Coulombe of the American Cancer Society. They must stop everything to deal with their diagnosis and this often includes taking time to be pampered or relax. A massage or pedicure helps anyone feel refreshed or renewed, but for someone going through such a stressful time this becomes even more meaningful, adds Jennifer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the gals behind FlipOut Sandals hosted a day of beauty at the American Cancer Societys Hope Lodge in NY City. Hope Lodge is a free of a charge housing facility for cancer patients who are traveling from out of state to NYC for treatment. There are 31 Hope Lodge locations throughout the United States. Once we learned about the Hope Lodge mission and the incredible services they offer residents free of charge, we knew we wanted to help out in any small way that we could, states FlipOut Sandals co-owner, Tracey Hunter. Were a company that changed the ordinary sandal to a sparkling attention grabbing accessory, and we took that same idea to bring a day of glitz and glam to the Hope Lodge. FlipOut Sandals transformed Hope Lodges common room into a spa and treated patients and staff to different luxury services. Its like feeling like a woman again for a moment, you forget the everyday appointments in the hospital and you break away from the hospital routine. This made my day, beamed Hope Lodge resident Carol. Spending time with a cancer patient, and providing them with a special spa treat is a wonderful way to say - I care! When a friend or family member is going through this kind of terrible experience, it is a beautiful thing to offer your time to take their mind off things, reveals Tracy. Take them out to coffee or shopping, or bring a few shades of nail polish and give them your own best attempt at a manicure. Offering your support as friend is a truly beautiful thing. 25% of the proceeds from the sale of FlipOut Sandals Pink Jelly Sandals and all pink shoe jewelry will be donated to the American Cancer Society throughout October. There's the smoothness of Frank (Max Martini), who starts to follow along with together with Emily, which she knows, but he'll uncover good info that could potentially ruin this complete master plan. I furthermore think Jack (Nick Wechsler) feels that something will there be, but he is doing less than know very well what. She's developed this major wall, but insidewithin all her, she's still that youthful girl who manage to feel. The truth is how she will get for Jack and the way she struggles using this façade that she's putting on. Giving youthful people careful analysis label yourself now or otherwise, praising anything that you're -- generation x will shame us. They're likely to nitpick as our nation gradually becomes fascism. I'm not extending its love to pretend any longer. I supported Obama for social issues. However the division isn't employed by me any longer. THR:The Walk of Fame star means you've created a permanent mark about this town. How can you experience the recognition? I'd say, "This is actually the town where, whenever you allow it to be, installed your title in stone." If there is the zombie apocalypse, my title would survive. It's very mythic and legendary.
