Hollywood Walk of Fame Honoree Melissa Etheridge Talks 'Glee,' Obama (Q&A)

It's a vintage Hollywood tale: Wide-eyed 21-year-old steps from the bus from Kansas with hopes for rock fame, hit records, honours and perhaps introducing among her idols. Melissa Etheridge accomplished everything and much more -- she duetted using the Boss, to begin with, and won two Grammys as well as an Oscar. Nonetheless, because the 50-year-old singer is acknowledged for her accomplishments having a star around the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she strongly recalls her place throughout the boulevard's seedier days, telling THR: "Whenever you develop within the Area, this is actually the Land of Oz. It's the dream I purchased it hook, line and sinker."our editor recommendsMelissa Etheridge on her behalf 'American Idiot' Role: 'It's Not really a Man or woman Thing'Melissa Etheridge on Why Gay Participants Fare Best on 'The Voice' Than 'American Idol'Melissa Etheridge, Physical Violence Worsens Ink Broadway DealsMelissa Etheridge splits with partner THR: You've accomplished a lot in music -- Grammys, multiple Top Ten hits, an Oscar for that song "I have to AwakenInch from An Bothersome Truth. Which moment sticks out? Melissa Etheridge: Singing "Thunder Road" with Bruce Springsteen [on MTV in 1995]. I had been very proud. It had been among individuals markers, such as the brass ring. Getting just emerge from singing at Woodstock ྚ for 300,000 people, it had been amazing. PHOTOS: Grammys: Top Ten Must-See Moments THR:Many recall your 2005 Grammy performance. You'd gone through chemotherapy while fighting cancer of the breast and lost hair. What had you been convinced that evening? Etheridge:I hadn't been from the house for 3 several weeks, therefore it was a little of the shock but an extremely personal evening. I had been inside a private meditation, like: "OK, Melissa, display to the world that cancer didn't kill you, that you simply're not suffering. And operate and sing among the finest tunes ever ["Bit of My Heart"], by among the finest artists, Janis Joplin." I hadn't prepared myself a lot for that bald factor -- I didn't consider the social part it performed. But years later, not really a week passes when someone doesn't let me know just how much the performance designed to them. THR:Was there anything profound stated backstage? Etheridge:I recall finding yourself in the rear hallway and hearing someone yell, "Move aside, everybody!" because J.Lo and Marc Anthony were walking by. I needed to line facing the wall. I figured, "Such a funky job I've within this crazy world." It had been a stark contrast towards the spiritual awakening I had been getting at that time. ... Probably the most profound factor was throughout dress testing when Kris Kristofferson walked onstage weeping and held me for, like, three minutes. PHOTOS: Grammys Red-colored Carpet THR:With Top 40 skewing so urban and dance-affected recently, where would you call at your role in music today? Etheridge:I'm writing for my next album now, and that i have completely forget about ever fitting in to the pop world. My job would be to create music of my soul. I don't have to play the overall game any longer. THR:Are you currently keen on Glee? Etheridge:It's clever and totally implies that the planet loves gay entertainment. Without us, an amount you laugh at? Although I needed to visit the Glee concert with my daughter -- my dear God, shoot me. However it's an equation that's existed forever: kids singing tunes we all know, large lights, dancing and screaming women. They've been doing the work since Frank Sinatra. PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 3: To School Pictures THR:You arrived on the scene 18 years back. If Glee have been around whenever you were a teen, wouldn't it have transformed your existence? Etheridge:Yes! I see my daughter's experience of senior high school. She and her buddies really discuss [their sexuality]. ... Giving youthful people careful analysis label yourself now or otherwise, praising anything that you're -- generation x will shame us. THR:Your tunes happen to be carried out on The American Idol Show. What organization of all of the TV singing shows today? Etheridge:It's just like a spectator sport. Everybody wants to evaluate it's an important a part of society and human instinct. I'm not surprised that talent shows are hits, however i'm glad a number of them aren't so brutal. PHOTOS: An 'American Idol' to 'X Factor' Timeline THR:You had been a vocal supporter of Obama's presidential bid in 2008, proclaiming in an L.A. concert that you simply "felt change coming." How's it going feeling about things now? Etheridge:In hindsight, it'll most likely be my last political endorsement of the Republican or Democrat. Not while he's disappointed me but because I now see very clearly they all response to exactly the same boss: large business -- the multinational companies that completely run our country. They're likely to nitpick as our nation gradually becomes fascism. I'm not extending its love to pretend any longer. I supported Obama for social issues. In my opinion he introduced our nation together and cured our racial divide. Martin Luther King's dream came true when he was chosen. That's huge. ... However the division isn't employed by me any longer. THR:The Walk of Fame star means you've created a permanent mark about this town. How can you experience the recognition? Etheridge:It's the strangest factor. I had been that girl in 1982 that walked along Hollywood Boulevard prior to being a tourist attraction, if this was crack sellers chilling out. I'd say, "This is actually the town where, whenever you allow it to be, installed your title in stone." If there is the zombie apocalypse, my title would survive. It's very mythic and legendary. Exclusive Video: 50 Cent Hopes Bruce Willis Thriller Set Up Boosts His Love Life

Movieline can’t help but root for 50 Cent and his acting career, football cancer movies and all. In an exclusive behind the scenes clip from his upcoming DVD release Set Up — a diamond heist thriller co-starring Bruce Willis and Ryan Phillippe — the rapper-thespian opens up and gets personal talking about the impact he hope his latest acting endeavor makes on his career and dating life. “I hope they realize that I’m a little bigger than usual, because it’s on the really, really big screen,” quips Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson backstage on the set of Set Up, which sadly forgoes a theatrical release and instead hits DVD and Blu-ray today. The synopsis of Set Up, however, takes a decidedly more serious tone: Former friends are pitted against one another after a diamond heist goes wrong. Betrayed, Sonny (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) takes matters into his own hands when he partners with a notorious mob boss (Bruce Willis) to seek revenge against his former ally who took off with his loot. But when Sonny finally comes face to face with the man he’s been hunting, he’s forced to make a life-altering decision. Morning Grind: Madonna Rumored to Make Trims on 'W.E.' and More

With backing from Harvey Weinstein, Madonna's latest directorial effort 'W.E.' was initially considered a possible awards contender for this fall. Then it premiered at the Venice Film Festival to hoots, hollers, and wildly negative reviews. Is the Material Girl's new film dead in the water? Not according to Page Six: the NY Post gossip column claims that Madonna is cutting 10 minutes out of 'W.E.' before its release in December. Said Madonna to the Daily Mail: "Maybe it needs a bit of this and a bit of that, and maybe it's still a work in progress ... For God's sake, I hope it's over with soon!" That's the spirit! [NYP] Good news on the Judd Apatow front. His new film -- which isn't actually officially titled 'This Is Forty,' but might as well be -- will finish filming on Tuesday. "It has suddenly gotten very sad around here," Apatow wrote on Twitter. "I am proud of our team. We gave our all." [@JuddApatow] "My real question is, are you telling me that you're smart, funny, and ugly? Because clearly you can't be pretty, right? I'm guessing that whoever's criticizing me, you're saying that you're smart and funny but you can't be all of them. And then they're like, 'Well, you're using that.' No, I'm just being who I am and I'm actually comfortable with my sexuality, and if you put on a push-up bra or put on lip gloss, do not criticize me at all. Because who are you wearing those things for? Unless you're at home by yourself with your significant other. Who are you out in the world doing that for, who are you trying to impress? So people can not like me, that's fine. People can not think I'm funny, that's fine. But when you're trying to make a statement for women in general -- I'm like, you know what? You don't speak for a lot of women I know, and you don't speak for me. It's just you and your narrow minded friends that can all have this opinion. At least preface it with that. Like, 'Hi -- me and my friends are really narrow-minded and we don't like Olivia.' Great. But don't speak on behalf of all women." Real talk from 'I Don't Know How She Does It' co-star Olivia Munn. [Movieline] 'Book of Mormon' star Josh Gad has -- wait for it -- booked a new role. (GROAN!) He'll co-star in Stuart Blumberg's 'Thanks for Sharing,' which already stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo and Tim Robbins. The film is about sex addiction. [Variety] "Is Ryan Gosling the new George Clooney?" Hopefully? [LAT] With 'Bridesmaids' out on DVD, interest in Melissa McCarthy's scene-stealing performance has renewed to the point that some people are discussing her as a possible stealth Best Supporting Actress nominee at the Academy Awards. Not likely, but let's cross our fingers together. [NextMovie] Photo: Darren Calabrese/AP

'Deep Blue Sea''The Marziano''I Wish''The Reasons from the Heart'Jose Luis Rebordinos nabbed Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Clive Owen starrer 'Intruders' for his first edition as San Sebastian festival directorLast September -- three several weeks after Jose Luis Rebordinos was named San Sebastian Festival director -- Spain's press squeezed its hands within the fest's future."Bigger black storm clouds" were rumbling into view, newspaper El Pais augured."Huge challenges -- economic, cinematographic -- await Rebordinos. He faces a titanic task, spreading loaves and seafood," it thundered.Rebordinos began his job in The month of january, and nine several weeks in, no disaster has struck the Basque festival -- quite the contrary as experts note a feeling of energy and direction towards the The spanish language meet.Indeed, global upheaval and Latin America's economic emergence may play into San Sebastian's hands.Rebordinos first handled San Sebastian's budget, observing that 2010's annual 6.7 million ($9.six million) was "little for any festival striving for important industry and worldwide press presence." He handled to obtain fest partner Guipuzcoa County to boost its investment by $208,800 to $1.4 million. Fest's other partners -- Sebastian Town Hall, the Basque regional government, Spain's Secretary of state for Culture -- all maintained $1.4 million annual funding.By netting new sponsors, for example insurance provider Mapfre Foundation (co-organizer of the frosh kids' film workshop), Rebordinos upped the fest's 2011 budget to $10.a million: a little miracle indeed.Using the budget in check, experts declare that 2011's levels of competition are a 2010 redux.Certainly a group of fest regulars return: Terence Davies, a 2008 retrospective recipient, with "The Dark Blue Ocean" past double Golden Spend champion Arturo Ripstein with "The Reason Why from the Heart" Ana Katz's dysfunctional family comedy "The Marziano" and Hirokazu Kore-eda, his 4th competition berth, with brother or sister drama "If Only."Hallmark sections remain: Kutxa-New Directors' competition, dangling a 90,000 cash prize Films happening, a showcase for incomplete films a retro of Jacques Demy and also the career achievement Donostia Award, this season provided to Glenn Close. But Rebordinos never stated that he's repairing San Sebastian in the bottom up."I have been in the festival's management committee since 1995: the 2010 changes really are a logical evolution," not really a total break, he argues. He walked into Mikel Olaciregui's footwear, he adds, partially to preserve San Sebastian's distinctive The spanish language and Latin American pic bent.Nevertheless, under Rebordinos San Sebastian is changing fast: Venice accustomed to nab Spain's greatest fall movies. This season, Spain's greatest film, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Clive Owen starrer "Burglars," opens San Sebastian, publish-Toronto. Marking its most powerful The spanish language selection in a long time, the 2011 fest boasts 17 world preems of local photos: competing is Benito Zambrano's publish-Civil War women's drama "The Sleeping Voice," Enrique Urbizu's crime thriller "No Relaxation for that Wicked" and Isaki Lacuesta's "The Double Steps." The spanish language films within the fest span more sections than ever before, from intimate drama (David Trueba's chamber piece "Madrid 1987"), radical cinema ("The Double Steps"), animation (Ignacio Ferreras' senior buddy comedy "Facial lines") and broad comedy (Telmo Esnal's mother-in-law-from-hell tale "Urteberri on, amona!"). Sidebars bowing this season: a Culinary Zinema showcase and Night time Tests. Brought by Martin Scorsese's George Harrison doc, special tests are up from four game titles this past year to 12, the foundation, possibly, states Rebordinos, for any stand alone section in 2012. You will find more genre choices: "Burglars," "No Relaxation" Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's fantasy thriller "Verbo" Nacho Vigalondo's "Extraterrestial," unfolding throughout a UFO attack and Oren Moverman's "Rampart," about shady L.A. police dealings. San Sebastian has two longer-term obsessions, Rebordinos states: "Building worldwide press presence (and) being a Latin America-European industry meeting point."This season, San Sebastian hosts a Mexico-Basque producers' meet. Rebordinos is speaking to Latin American film institutes about staging a Europe-Latin America co-production forum in 2012. A best situation example, he states, climax an industry as opposed to a co-production meeting, is Ventana Sur, organized by Argentina's Incaa Film Institute and Cannes' Market. The timing is great: 2 yrs ago, Latin American producers looked to Europe for finance now European producers are starting to turn to Latin America.A bigger industry presence draws in more world premieres and much more press. But a forum entails a bigger budget. "I'm going to be focusing on it beginning in October," Rebordinos states.HIGHLIGHTSPremieresSan Sebastian has secured 36 world premieres this season, including 21 from The country, six from Latin America and three from Asia.World preems with major pre-fest buzz include Kim Ki-duk's Europe-lensed "Amen" paraplegic-designed closing evening pic "Untouchable," from Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache and acquired through the Weinstein Co. in This summer Sebastian Cordero's Ecuadorian road movie "Pescador" Julie Delpy's space station pic "Le Skylab" and Filippos Tsitos' Greek crime drama "Unfair World."Worldwide premieres include Martin Scorsese's documentary "George Harrison: Residing in a fabric World" "The 3 Musketeers" by Paul W.S. South Korean Romance Film Inspires Real-Life Break-Up Agency

If your romantic relationship is doomed to failure but you simply cannot summon the courage to end it, then boy, does China have the service for you! For the equivalent of anywhere between $15 and $30 USD, Chinese residents can hire a break-up agency to end their relationship. Is it cowardly? Yes! Painless? Yes! (Well, for you.) Inspired by a romance film? Yes again! After seeing the Korean film Sad Movie, Tu Weiming, a 25-year-old man from Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, started up a break-up service to help smooth strangers’ heartbreaks. Offered via the e-commerce website Taobao, Weiming and his agents charge clients on a case-by-case basis depending on the time, travel and consolation gifts involved. Agents deliver news of break-up through phone call, e-mail or instant message, proving that there is indeed something worse than being dumped via IM: Being dumped by a third party via IM. Several competing break-up agencies have popped up in China and while their break-up services vary slightly by company, they all reject cases that involve libel, criminal behavior, a partner under the age of 18, a partner in an ambiguous relationship or a partner that is mentally unstable. (You’re going to have to handle that one yourself.) A break-up agent who spoke with WantChinaTimes.com added that agencies “usually” reject cases of married couples. So that’s great news for the institution of marriage, or human evolution or something. Sad Movie, the 2005 South Korean ensemble film that inspired this break-up industry, follows one character who takes a job helping other couples break up. Ironically, he finds employment to woo back his ex-girlfriend, who dumped him because of his career instability. Check out an excerpt below. Break-up agencies are not just limited to China though. According to the BBC News, there is a German businessman who informs unsuspecting spouses and partners that their significant others want to end their relationships. The 52-year-old goes by the nickname “The Terminator” and charges slightly more money to deliver the news in person. · Not In Love Anymore? The Woman

'The Lady'A EuropaCorp presentation of the EuropaCorp, Left Bank Pictures, France 2 Cinema co-production, using the participation of Canal Plus, France 2 Cinema, Telecine. (Worldwide sales: EuropaCorp, Paris.) Created by Virginie Besson-Silla, Andy Harries. Directed by Luc Besson. Script, Rebecca Frayn.Aung San Suu Kyi - Michelle Yeoh Michael Aris - David Thewlis Kim - Jonathan Raggett Alex - Jonathan Woodhouse"Democracy needs time to work," a personality observes in "The Woman,Inch though audiences of political stripes is going to be checking their watches throughout Luc Besson's dully conventional tribute to heroic Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi. Dramatizing the lengthy-term personal sacrifices produced by Suu Kyi and her family in courageous defiance of Burma's cruel military regime, this handsomely mounted picture is, at nearly 2 1/2 hrs, way too lengthy and indigestible for any film whose protagonist stays the majority of her screen time under house arrest. An advertising and marketing campaign emphasizing Michelle Yeoh's performance within the title role will precede moderate public reception. A prologue occur 1947 Rangoon represents the murder of Suu Kyi's father, Gen. Aung San, quite the hero to his people for that key role he performed in liberating Burma from British rule. Only 3 when her father is wiped out, Suu Kyi is next observed in 1988, like a beautiful, apparently lighthearted lady (now performed by Michelle Yeoh) residing in British domestic bliss together with her husband, Oxford academic Michael Aris (David Thewlis), as well as their two sons, Kim (Jonathan Raggett) and Alex (Jonathan Woodhouse). But Suu Kyi shows her inner strength when she's known as to Rangoon to look after her ailing mother, and it is horrified by fresh eruptions of violence and riots. Once the dictatorial Gen. Ne Win (Htun Lin) appears to bow towards the revolutionaries' demands, Suu Kyi's buddies and co-workers request her to remain in Rangoon and lead the emergent National League for Democracy, realizing the daughter from the late Gen. Aung San will make a effective figurehead for his or her cause. "This is actually the moment you usually thought will come,Inch Michael intones, a line that could confuse the naive, given how little from the couple's personal resolve for Burma has managed to get towards the screen. Getting made an appearance to concede, Gen. Ne Win and the callous military government plot to limit Suu Kyi's influence without making the error of martyring her. To help keep her from presuming her responsibilities after her landslide victory in Burma's first general election, they place her under house arrest for the following fifteen years, without any use of phones, newspapers or TV, and incredibly infrequent visits from her family people, who're barred from entering the nation at nearly every turn. Attracted from interviews with key figures near to Suu Kyi, Rebecca Frayn's first-created script is difficult-pressed to create an adequate portrait of either the woman or even the political firestorm by which she finds herself. As the momentous historic forces at the office happen to be naturally limited to match a 143-minute running time, the discourse need not happen to be so simplistic: While Gen. Ne Win barks orders at his uniform-clad minions, Suu Kyi impresses her supporters with pearls of knowledge like "Democracy is only going to work as we include everyone." The writing rarely increases above such platitudes, even just in casual conversation while British wasn't Suu Kyi's first language, surely her interactions together with her husband and youngsters were shipped with less stilted formality compared to they are here. Besson's direction is overall more staid and classical than a single would expect in the French action specialist, reinforcing the feeling of a complacent, risk-averse picture that appears to possess taken its filmmaking cues from the heroine's unflappable dignity. "The WomanInch constitutes a stylish spectacle of Suu Kyi's noble suffering without grasping, or inviting the viewer to understand, the political anger roiling beneath. A commanding screen presence, Yeoh inhales poise and moral authority in each and every scene when putting on flowers in her own hair, as she does frequently here, she's an image of loveliness. But because her role basically includes a number of elegant soundbites, the actress is not because of the assets to search far beneath Suu Kyi's couch potatoes surface. Nor is she in a position to illuminate the fierce inner struggle it has to took her to confront many years of isolation with sophistication and composure intact. The love story may be the film's most compelling element, as well as in their final moments particularly, Yeoh and Thewlis do begin a stirring feeling of this couple's unbreakable bond over greater than a decade's separation. Because he's more in the element vocally than Yeoh and given a wider selection of notes to experience, Thewlis really helps make the most powerful impression within the well-selected cast, though Raggett and Woodhouse also shine as two sensitive, well-elevated kids to whom the discomfort of parent-child separation showed up suddenly soon. Production is superbly put together, with Thai locations waiting in for Burma, although the action is basically limited to Michael's Oxford home and also the Rangoon estate that grew to become Suu Kyi's beautiful prison. Eric Serra's over-emphatic score is compounded with snatches of Pachelbel's "Canon in D," mainly throughout the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony where Suu Kyi is honored in absentia, among the couple of sequences here that realizes its emotional potential.Camera (Technicolor, widescreen), Thierry Arbogast editor, Julien Rey music, Eric Serra music supervisor, Alexandre Mahout production designer, Hugues Tissandier art company directors, Stephane Robuchon, Gilles Boillot, Thierry Zemmour, Dominque Moisan set designer, Tissandier costume designer, Olivier Beriot seem (DTS/Dolby Digital), Didier Lozahic, Ken Yasumoto seem designer, Ken Yasumoto visual effects supervisor, Alain Carsoux visual effects, Duran Duboi connect producer, Jean Todt assistant director, Ludovic Bernard casting, Fiona Weir, Raweeporn "Non" Jungmeier.
